Data Review Part 1
Laying the Groundwork for MTSS Success
We’re back digging in deeper to preparing for your mid-year data review and goal setting. Here are the first two steps to consider before the meeting.
Step 1: Gather and Analyze Your Data
As we step into the new year, the foundation of effective MTSS goal setting lies in understanding where your students and systems currently stand. Data is your compass, pointing the way toward impactful action. Start by gathering Universal Screening Data and Intervention Enrollment Data.
The key here is efficiency—use existing reports wherever possible. Digging into this data helps you pinpoint strengths, identify areas for growth, and ensure every decision is informed by evidence. If you’ve felt overwhelmed by numbers in the past, try narrowing your focus to a few key questions:
Are there patterns in student performance across grade levels?
Which interventions are under- or over-utilized?
Are there any notable trends in student progress?
Let the data tell its story, and you’ll be better equipped to guide your team toward meaningful goals.
Step 2: Be Prepared with Clear Examples
Once you’ve gathered the data, the next step is to bring clarity and inspiration to your goal-setting meeting. Your team will look to you for guidance, so come prepared with examples of realistic, attainable goals that align with your school or district’s needs.
For example:
“Increase the percentage of students meeting benchmark on reading fluency by 10% by the spring screening.”
“Increase the percentage of students who we’re moving from Tier 2 reading interventions to Tier 1 supports only. Aim for 20% of students moving back to Tier 1 only in grades K - 3.”
The examples you create using your own schoolwide data will demonstrate how to turn raw data into actionable steps. And if your team isn’t familiar with SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-Bound), this is the perfect opportunity to model the process. Don’t forget to use graphics and visuals whenever possible. My personal fave these days are pie charts because everyone can understand them so easily. Clarity and simplicity are your best tools here!
